About Topaz

Topaz was built in 1914 at the very end of the Edwardian era, it is a beautiful mid terrace building with a few remaining period features including bay windows, high ceilings, plaster coving and a winding staircase. We are one of the only hotels on Albert Road to not have had an alteration made to the roof at the front of the building.

Since its construction it has always been a boarding house, guest house or hotel. At some point number 17 (currently the Sonora Park Hotel) was part of the same building as ours.
The hotel was called The Portland Hotel, or simply The Portland until we re-named it to Topaz in March 2016.

We have full modern amenities at Topaz, everything you would expect, all of our rooms are ensuite, they all have flat screen TV’s with DVD players, we have free WiFi throughout the building and a bean to cup coffee machine in the lounge.

Since moving in to the hotel in March 2016, we have made many changes including re-decorating every room and hallway, replacing all the mattresses and beds, we have less beds per room and many rooms have sofas or chairs too. We really believe that quality and comfort come first!

About our building

Old buildings have their character and charm but sadly are not very accessible owing to the layout, we are not accessible to anyone in a wheelchair. All of our ten rooms are on the first and second floors. Rooms One to Five on the first floor have 18 steps up to them and rooms Six to Ten have 36 steps to them.

We have a bannisters & handrails on both sides of the staircase up to the first floor.

We will make every effort we can to be able to ensure that you get a room on the first floor if you require one.

We recently changed our two entrance doors for one larger door which is easier to get in and out of the building if you have a walking frame.

Our hotel has everything that you will need and a few things that you did not expect!
